Have You Ever Suffered From Identity Crisis?

Most small business owners are told to “find a niche market”. For some, that’s a no-brainer. A musician makes music, a painter paints, a jewellery designer makes and sells jewellery.
However, there are a few of us out there that do a multitude of different things. For instance, having an administrative background allows me to do everything from bookkeeping, to word processing to email and social media management.
In the Virtual Assistant world, we are told to narrow in on a target market. Work with realtors, or personal coaches. For me, the variety is the spice of life. I’ve been fortunate enough to work with coaches, musicians, writers, artists, etc. If I said today that I was only going to work with artists, I would feel like I had closed the door to opportunities to help those in other markets who need the same skills I can provide, no matter what their profession.
So, even though I’ve been doing administrative support work for over twenty years, I feel like recently I’ve been having an identity crisis. The world of “Virtual Assistants” was not one that was widely recognized or understood until a few years ago. This led me to the term “Administrative Consulting”. Which is what I do, but again, still a term that sometimes needs further explanation.
Anyway, this is sort of my coming out, if you will. I feel very confident these days in the “Virtual Assistant” role, as there are a great number of us who are professionals in this field (not just overseas agencies ). There are also some really great organizations that support us “VA’s” with keeping up with trends and professional designations. http://www.ivaa.org/
So, thank you for listening to my confession…there will be some exciting changes coming for me in the next year. Stay posted to my website and my blog to find out about all the fun and progress that is happening.

For now, I will be sticking with Virtual Assistant and Social Media Manager. I have found a nice cozy niche and that is in the form of exceptional administrative support, be it for circus folk or professional cheerleaders!
